`I will not get involved in political issues anymore. I will also not participate in resolving political conflicts. I have done that for many years now, 16 years to be exact as prime minister,`

`Iron Lady` Merkel added that her wish as soon as she retiresĀ is to sleep freely and read books.

`Over the years, due to my busy work schedule, I have always had to be ready. That is what anyone must do as the head of the government, if any problems arise.

Mrs. Merkel was elected Chancellor of Germany in 2005. Throughout her political career, Mrs. Merkel has been considered the `Iron Lady` with tough, decisive decisions, but also a kind-hearted woman with strong decisions.

After 16 years, Mrs. Merkel, 67 years old, announced that she would retire from politics and decided not to run in the general election taking place in September this year.

On October 26, she submitted her resignation to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and was accepted.

In a 20-minute interview with Deutsche Welle, Mrs. Merkel repeatedly emphasized her commitment to supporting multilateralism.

Regarding climate change response policy, Mrs. Merkel, who served as Germany’s minister in charge of climate change in the 1990s, said she understands the pressure from the younger generation asking governments to take action.

Sharing about the difficulties and challenges during her time leading Germany, Mrs. Merkel said that one of the most challenging times for her was in 2015 when Germany faced a wave of refugees from other countries.

`Yes, we did, but not everything worked out the way I expected,` Merkel admitted in the interview.
