Coming to Soviet audiences in the early 1980s, the poor artist's melody and unrequited love story became an immortal love song, sympathized with and accepted by many people around the world.

In love, romance is just enough to make the couple’s relationship more passionate, love more green and sweet.

Portrait of artist Niko Pirosmani.

Niko Pirosmani was born into a poor farmer family.

By the end of his life, Niko Pirosmani was still a poor artist.

Niko Pirosmani has been lonely all his life.

People pass down the love story between the artist and the singer that Pirosmani sold all his assets – including the house he lived in – to buy a sea of flowers for his beloved.

Painting of Margarita.

Niko Pirosmani’s love story was later recorded in the novel by K. G. Paustovsky.

There is an artist who lives alone

Just a small house and paintings

He is infatuated with the flower-loving singer.

The painter sold his house

Selling the paintings too

Then use all the money to buy a sea of flowers.

Million, million, million red roses

I can see it from the window

The one in love, the one who truly loves you

The person who turned his whole life into flowers to give to you.

In the morning when I woke up I came to the door frame

Maybe I didn’t expect it

I thought I was in a dream

My house’s square is filled with flowers.

My heart is confused

Which millionaire does this in such a strange way?

But below the window there is only a lonely breath

The poor artist stood there.

The meeting was short

The night train took her away

But in her life there was a crazy song about roses.

The artist still lives alone

Hard and painful

But in his life there was once a square full of flowers.

Million, million, million red roses

I can see it from the window

The one in love, the one who truly loves you

The person who turned his whole life into flowers to give to you (*)

The reason why it is said that Voznesensky put the lyrics to Pauls’ music is because before that, Pauls composed the melody and Leons Briedis wrote the lyrics in Latvian, with the name Marina given to his child (see video).

A million roses is associated with the name of singer Alla Pugacheva.

In the recounted anecdote, artist Niko Pirosmani gave Margarita not only roses of all colors but also honeysuckle, lilies, poppies, dahlias… The song’s lyrics mention crimson roses – symbolic.

Or in Chinese music, the song 999 roses (singer Dai Chinh Tieu, watch video) is also a monument to love songs.

'A Million Roses' - a love story that transcends borders

The image of a rose on a small squared paper became part of the memories of a generation.

Perhaps thanks to roses, thanks to the love of people around the world for roses, Russian songs are closer and easier to enter people’s hearts.

A million roses rang out in many schools, construction sites… in Vietnam in the 1980s and 90s.
