Italy Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon proposed increasing the size of the goal, because of the stature of the players and the changes in modern football.

`Maybe it’s time to think about increasing the size of the goal. I just discussed this with my family and my wife,` Buffon told Tuttosport on December 30.

The official 11-yard football goal dimensions have been 7.32 meters wide and 2.44 meters high since 1875, and have not changed since then.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in Juventus shirt plays host to Newcastle at St James Park in Group E Champions League on October 23, 2002.

Buffon, a former goalkeeper who is 1m92 tall, believes that the goal size of 7.32 meters wide and 2.44 meters high is no longer suitable for modern football.

The former Juventus and Italy goalkeeper further argued that the effectiveness of tall goalkeepers had a significant impact on scoring, especially from long shots.

According to Italian media, Buffon’s proposal could open up debate on adjusting the size of the goal to suit the growing physique of the players, thereby helping to make matches more attractive and have more goals.

When asked if the proposal would be approved, Buffon replied: `It’s not for me to decide. There are governing bodies that will certainly consider and study this. The goalkeepers are taller, but

Buffon is one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, one of 31 players to have played more than 1,000 matches.

From 2001 to 2018, Buffon played for Juventus.

Buffon has never won the Champions League, although he reached the final three times with Juventus in 2003, 2015 and 2017. He won the UEFA Cup with Parma in 1999, finishing second at Euro 2012. Buffon was selected by IFFHS as the best goalkeeper of the 2001 period.

At the national team level, Buffon holds a record of 176 matches played for Italy, 40 more matches than the second ranked player.
