Thousands of people in Ho Chi Minh City suffer from post-Covid complications 7

About 4,000 patients have come to the Post-Covid Clinic at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital over the past month, due to sequelae of fatigue, shortness of breath, insomnia, hair loss...

In particular, among them, up to 50% had test results and diagnostic imaging to detect cardiovascular and pulmonary abnormalities such as pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, acute and chronic respiratory failure, and blood clotting causing embolism.

About 80% of patients have sequelae with characteristic persistent symptoms, lasting a few weeks to 3-4 months.

The post-Covid clinic was established by Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital on December 6, 2021.

According to Dr. Vinh, most patients recover their health after treating post-Covid-19 symptoms.

In Vietnam, there have been no studies or surveys on long-term Covid sequelae as well as data on people with sequelae in the community.

In practice, doctors recorded many cases of very severe sequelae.

`Post-Covid-19 sequelae are really a big concern. If the patient comes to the hospital late and the lungs do not recover, there is a risk of having to depend on an oxygen generator for life,` said Dr. Vinh.

F0 patients who have to be on a ventilator, breathe oxygen, or stay in an intensive care unit (ICU) are at high risk of developing complications after recovering from the disease.

Gia Dinh People’s Hospital in 40 days received 1,021 patients for examination due to post-Covid-19 health problems.

Ho Chi Minh City Occupational Disease Treatment and Rehabilitation Hospital has so far received 1,050 post-Covid-19 examinations.

`Therefore, a Covid patient having a negative test result after treatment does not mean the symptoms are completely cured,` said Dr. Hoang.

Sequelae require early treatment

Doctors recommend that all Covid-19 patients need to be re-examined soon after being discharged from the hospital to be tested and have a general assessment of their physical condition, thereby promptly detecting and treating sequelae and returning to life soon.

Post-Covid-19 sequelae are identified as one of the key health issues in Ho Chi Minh City in 2022, when more than half a million people are infected with Covid-19, accounting for about 5% of the population.

Currently, many hospitals, both central and city hospitals, have established post-Covid-19 treatment departments such as Children’s 1, Tropical Diseases, Le Van Thinh, Institute of Traditional Medicine, and Hospitals.

Each hospital also implements its own activities.

Oriental medicine is also involved in post-Covid-19 treatment.

According to Dr. Loc, the program is expected to provide health care for about 12,000 F0 patients.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City Oriental Medicine Association and other units will set up a hotline to advise and support information on the care and treatment of people infected with Covid-19.
