Post-Covid sequelae - a community concern in 2022 7

Ho Chi Minh City Gia Dinh People's Hospital received 1,021 patients for examination due to post-Covid-19 health problems, in just over 40 days (from December 1, 2021 to January 10).

The information was shared by Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Nguyen Anh Dung at the Conference to deploy key activities of the health sector in 2022, on the afternoon of January 12.

Among patients with Covid sequelae examined at Gia Dinh hospital, 510 people had respiratory symptoms (accounting for nearly 50%), 182 had neurological symptoms, 134 had cardiovascular symptoms, and 180 had cardiovascular disease.

`These are concerning numbers, posing many problems and challenges that need to be solved immediately,` said Dr. Dung.

According to Dr. Dung, currently nearly 2% of the Vietnamese population has Covid-19 but there are no statistics or complete records of the post-Covid-19 situation in the community.

Since October 2021, the world has definitions for post-Covid-19 syndrome.

`Some statistics record that about 33-76% of patients may experience post-Covid symptoms at least 6 months after the acute episode of the disease, of which 20% of patients must be re-hospitalized, 80% of patients must be monitored.

Studies around the world have noted that post-Covid not only occurs in seriously ill patients who need to be hospitalized or are elderly and have underlying medical conditions, but also in young people with mild illnesses.

Post-Covid healthcare strategy

Ho Chi Minh City’s health sector has set an important goal in the coming time to determine the model of post-Covid patients in the area, apply information technology in post-Covid health care management, and improve care capacity.

Two post-Covid care strategies deployed by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health are outreach and early intervention.

While waiting for the Ministry of Health to update and issue a post-Covid treatment regimen, the city will gather experts to provide temporary guidance.

The city’s post-Covid-19 health care and management model also follows the 3-storey tower model.

Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Duong Anh Duc highly appreciated the efforts of the city’s health sector in the fight against Covid-19 last year.
